The Lowly Deliverer
(Isaiah 42:1-9)
Jerome called Isaiah ‘the Evangelical Prophet’. There are four Servant Songs, but Barry Webb justifiably adds Isaiah 61.

1. The Servant will be meek and lowly.
– vv.2-3; Matt.12:15-21
– Matt.11:28-30; note Luke 7:47-50; John 4:14-26; 6:37
2. The Servant will call in the Gentiles.
– vv.1, 4-6
– He will rule the nations (Ps.2) but He is gentle first with the nations
3. The Servant will bring in justice, light, and freedom.
– vv.1, 3-4, 6-7 (note Eph.4:17-19)
– Raymond Ortlund Jr: ‘You and I are living dungeons.’
– this is a victory announced before the event (v.9)
