The Seven Bowls
(Revelation 15-16)
– these seven plagues of warning are ‘God’s megaphone’ (C. S. Lewis)
1. God’s people are redeemed.
– 15:1-4; one with the song of Moses in Exodus 15, which is a song of redemption
2. History is a series of expressions of God’s wrath against sin.
– the seven plagues are sores, the sea turned to blood, waters turned to blood, the scorching sun, darkness and pain, Armageddon, and the judgment on Babylon.
– reminiscent of the plagues on Egypt
– there are no mountains of Megiddo; Jesus can come like a thief in history (Rev.3:3)
3. God shouts at us to repent.
– 16:9, 11, 21; Michael Foucault; Peter Blazey; Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005; Californian bushfires in 2007 after ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ are banned from textbooks.
